Collaboration with Germany and UBC

The University of British Columbia was honoured to meet Stafan Muller, Parliamentary Secretary of State, Ministry of Education and Research Germany. The delegation from Germany were here to discuss collaboration between Germany and UBC. In particular, the DLR@UBC partnership was highlighted with a visit to the Composites Research Network in the Brimacombe building. Professor Fernlund, Drs. Nobeiry and Mobuchon hosted the visitors. 2017 Acta Materialia Hollomon Award for Materials & Society

AMGM’s Scientific Director,Dr. Warren Poole, is the recipient of the 2017 Acta Materialia Hollomon Award for Materials & Society. Dr. Poole’s research into the properties of lightweight metals has led him to create safe, mass-producible alloy automobile parts that could reduce fuel use and greenhouse gases emitted by vehicles in Canada by 40 percent by 2025. He holds a leading position in the field of Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME), is a member of multiple international conference committees and advisory boards, has facilitated industry-academy partnerships in North America, the United Kingdom and Europe, and continues to teach, advise, and develop curricula for both undergraduates and graduate students. Avcorp Industries and UBC agree to pursue innovative partnership

Avcorp Industries and the University of British Columbia have agreed to explore the establishment of a Learning Factory for Advanced Composites at UBC’s Okanagan campus. The two parties, represented by Avcorp CEO Peter George and UBC Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Principal Deborah Buszard, signed an MOU today at the Farnborough International Airshow in the United Kingdom. Through the development of a composites research and production facility at the UBC Okanagan Innovation Precinct, as well as an integrated digital simulation facility at UBC’s Vancouver campus, the Learning Factory will provide Avcorp Industries enhanced ability to evaluate and improve manufacturing efficiency.

UBC engineers inducted as CAE Fellows

AMGM theme leads Steven Cockcroft (Materials Engineering) and Elizabeth Croft (Mechanical Engineering), have been inducted as Fellows of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) in recognition of their distinguished achievements and career-long service to the engineering profession. They join AMGM theme leads Anoush Poursartip and Yusuf Altintas as Fellows of the Academy. The ceremony took place in Winnipeg, in conjunction with the Academy’s Annual General Meeting on June 27, 2016.

Steven Cockcroft For significant contributions as a globally recognized expert in manufacturing process engineering through industrial experiments and modelling of casting processes and defects with over 15 top Canadian and International producers; a recognized world expert on aluminum alloy wheel casting and aerospace-grade titanium remelting; and for over 25 years of outstanding contributions to the UBC Engineering Community through excellence in teaching of undergraduates, educating of over 50 graduate students, pivotal contributions as Department Head and Dean Pro Tem in hiring the next generation of faculty members, and championing the use of UBC facilities as a “Living Laboratory” for alternative energy research.

Elizabeth Croft Dr. Croft is an internationally respected figure in robotics, particularly robot trajectory planning and human-robot interaction. She has written over 150 scholarly articles in these broad areas. Dr. Croft is an international leader in recruiting women into engineering. As the NSERC Chair for Women in Science and Engineering, and as Associate Dean of Engineering at UBC, Dr. Croft was a prime driving force behind the almost doubling of the number of women in engineering at UBC. Dr. Croft’s service and research excellence have been recognized through the awarding of major provincial, national and international awards.

Election to the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) is one of the highest professional honours accorded an engineer. Fellows have distinguished themselves in different sectors including business, academia and government and in different roles such as business management, executive management, technical and university faculty. Fellows of the CAE are nominated and elected by their peers (current CAE Fellows) to honorary fellowship in the Academy, in view of their distinguished achievements and career-long service to the engineering profession.

Dr. Anoush Poursartip elected a SAMPE Fellow

We are very pleased to announce that Dr. Anoush Poursartip, Professor in the Department of Materials Engineering and Director of the Composites Research Network has been elected a SAMPE Fellow by the Society for Advanced Materials and Process Engineering (SAMPE,www.sampe.org) for distinguished contributions in the fields of materials and processes. The citation reads: “Dr. Anoush Poursartip has been the driving force and innovator for the continuous development of simulation tools to meet the needs of DoD, NASA and OEM’s/Tier 1 companies. These tools were specifically for the complex design, development, manufacturing and interaction of composites materials, tooling and finished hardware for primary and secondary structure. His work is best illustrated by the use of simulation tools with The Boeing Company over the entire lifetime of the 787’s development.
